US Could Control COVID-19 in 12 Weeks If 90% Wear Masks, Social Distance: CDC Head

August 21, 2020

NEW YORK (1010 WINS) -- The head of the Centers for Disease Control on Friday said the U.S. could get the COVID-19 pandemic “under control” in approximately 12 weeks if at least 90 percent of Americans start taking mask-wearing, social distancing and handwashing seriously.

Speaking with reporters on a conference call, CDC Director Robert Redfield said reining in the crisis is “in our hands, within our grasp,” CNBC reported.

“But it is going to require all of us to embrace these mitigation steps,” he said, according to the outlet. “And we’re going to need to do that four, six, eight, 10, 12 weeks and then we will see this outbreak under control.”

The U.S. has seen some progress over the past four weeks, but “none of us should turn away from the recognition that it’s key to each of us to recognize we want to make sure COVID stops with us,” he added.
