Dolly Parton hopes her latest Christmas album, and Netflix movie Christmas on The Square, will act as a catalyst for a divided country she believes is yearning for unity.

“This is the Christmas season coming up. But we need to carry that Christmas spirit of peace on Earth, and loving one another,” the country legend told TODAY during an extensive interview. "We can't save the world, but we can save the world we're living in," she declared. "Maybe I'm dreaming. But I don't think so."

Parton is gearing up to play a literal angel in the new Netflix Christmas movie, due out November 22. Fans are excited to see Dolly impart that same wisdom as an ethereal character, but she’s not waiting to dole out advice as the most wonderful time of year nears. “We need to carry that Christmas spirit of peace on Earth, and loving one another. We need to carry that into the new year," Parton told TODAY. "And Lord knows, I hope next year is better than this one."

She also wrote an original song, self-titled for the film. It’s off her latest Christmas album A Holly Dolly Christmas, her first Christmas album in 30 years. "I've been wanting to do another Christmas album for a long time, and I had the time to do it, since we had kind of all holed up at home," she said. "So I started writing some of these original songs, and I gathered up some more of the old classics. And grabbed a bunch of friends, and we just kind of went for it."

Celebrity friends like Miley Cyrus, Michael Bublé and Jimmy Fallon join Dolly on the 12-track Christmas extravaganza that released last month.
